Triton router

The best routers from Triton

The company Triton comes from Australia and has specialised in the production of precision tools. Some of the manufacturer’s tools have already won many awards – including the company’s own routers. A Triton router promises a high level of operating comfort and is classically supplied with power via a mains cable. The company currently offers 3 versions with different motors: JOF001 (1010 watts), MOF001 (1400 watts) and TRA001 (2400 watts).

In the following, we will show you which router from Triton is recommended. You will also find out what you should bear in mind in this context. We hope to be able to help you with this guide.

Triton router – 2 models in the presentation

Triton TRA001

TRA001 review

The routers from Triton can develop a lot of power and are therefore also suitable for machining hard materials. The currently most powerful model is the Triton TRA001 .

The device has a 2400-watt motor, which corresponds to 3.25 hp. Thanks to this, you can make use of a stroke of up to 68 mm and thus remove a lot of material within a short period of time. Cutters up to 12 mm can be fitted. Two collets, a spanner, a height crank and a multifunction fence are included as standard. Thanks to the automatic spindle lock, an open-ended spanner is all that is needed to change the attachment.

Precision is not neglected either. As usual for this price segment, the adjustment can be made in millimetre steps via the turret stop. You can also connect an extractor and adjust the speed variably if required. The rubberised double handle ensures safe and controlled handling. However, the rather high weight of 6.4 kg must be mentioned, which means that this router is perhaps not recommended for women or elderly people.

All in all, the TRA001 is a powerful router from Triton. With it, you can quickly master large tasks. The powerful motor enables a high material removal rate. However, this inevitably has an effect on the weight, which at 6.4 kg can be a strain on the forearms in the long run. For beginners, however, a light weight can help to prevent slipping. Customers like to integrate this router into a router table. Of course, this is up to the user.

Triton JOF001

JOF001 Plunge

Triton also provides good routers for filigree applications. A recommendation for smaller applications is the Triton JOF001 .

This router is quite handy and only 28 cm wide. Thanks to the rubberised double handle, it is easy to handle. However, the weight of this router is also around 5 kg. Other manufacturers offer weights of around 3 kg with a 1000-watt motor. This difference can cause fatigue, but it is more forgiving of slight lapses in concentration when moving, as these are not immediately transferred to the object. This compact Triton router can also work with cutters between 6 and 12 mm.

Apart from the router bits and a case, everything is included in the scope of delivery to enable flexible operation. If only short jobs are planned, it is not necessarily worth combining the machine with a hoover. In this context, Triton offers you a separate 23-litre container. Despite the comparatively small motor, you can still set a lifting height of up to 59 mm.

In summary, the JOF001 is a handy router from Triton. It is ideally suited for delicate work in your own workshop. The device can be put into operation quickly and operated intuitively. The rubberised double handle and the included rip fence ensure a high level of comfort. The constant speed electronics ensure that good work results are achieved even with uneven loads. Customers are largely satisfied. It should be noted, however, that the UK version can only be used in the EU with an adapter (not included).

Triton router – You should always pay attention to the following

Selection options & drive

As already mentioned, the Triton range currently includes only 3 routers. These are all supplied with power via a mains cable. They differ primarily in the power of the motor. This is as follows:

  • 1010 watts / 1.5 hp (model JOF001)
  • 1400 watts / 2.25 hp (model MOF001)
  • 2400 Watt / 3,25 hp (model TRA001)

The power cable enables the respective router to be put into operation immediately. While 2 collets, an open-end spanner, a rip fence and a height crank are included as standard, the router bit of your choice must be purchased yourself. All models come in versions between 6 and 12 mm. Incidentally, Triton does not produce a transport case, so you will have to turn to other manufacturers.

High-quality milling cutters are available from Bosch, ENT and DeWalt, among others. Useful ones are, for example, the following:

  • V-groove cutter
  • T-slot cutter
  • Rebate cutter
  • Rounding cutter
  • Side milling cutters

Generally, a gearless electric motor requires little maintenance. If the carbon brushes are worn out, you can replace them without complications via the top of your Triton router. The disadvantage of the existing carbon brush motor is the fact that some power can be lost through friction.

Power

Power is always of critical importance. If it does not match the task at hand, frustration and stress are only the logical consequence. In the router segment, you should look at several parameters in this context.

The most obvious indicator of performance is certainly the wattage. However, this should be treated with caution, because like many other manufacturers, the Triton brand only indicates the so-called power consumption in this case. Depending on the model, it is up to 2400 watts. Only the power output can show how much power is actually delivered. This is usually always somewhat lower. Because a Triton router is not brushless, you have to expect some friction losses.

The more powerful the router, the more material you can remove per period. With a Triton router, the stroke is generally adjustable from up to 68 mm, which can definitely be considered commendable.

Furthermore, you can adjust the speed electronically. This is done via a wheel. In most cases, you simply work at the highest speed. This makes sense for delicate work, as there is only a slight risk of chipping. With a high material removal rate, however, it is not quite as important how high the speed is. Even then, however, you should not operate permanently at the minimum value, as this would cause the motor to suffer and subsequently wear out more quickly.

Depending on the model, a Triton router can work at 8,000 to 24,000 rpm. Accordingly, you can adequately treat a wide range of material hardnesses and depths.

Handling

A high level of operating comfort is certainly of interest to every user. If handling is comfortable, you can concentrate on the task at hand and do not have to expect any physical discomfort.

A Triton router promises you a lot of comfort. First of all, however, one must note the rather negative – the devices are comparatively heavy. Even the small 1010-watt version weighs 5 kg. The top model even weighs 6.4 kg. However, a high weight has the advantage that you don’t slip off so easily. Nevertheless, the forearms suffer over time.

All in all, guiding a Triton router is quite painless, thanks to the rubberised double handle. It can be gripped securely and firmly. Nevertheless, you don’t have to worry about feelings of pressure or even calluses on the palm.

Triton relies on operating elements that are tried and tested for this segment. For example, a 3-step revolver stop and a height crank ensure precision. You can easily adjust the depth by loosening and then tightening the front turning knob.

A so-called multi-gauge also helps you to create precise grooves. If you want to mill crosswise, it is advisable to purchase a separate table glide plate.

If you want to integrate your Triton router into a stationary router table, this is easily done by removing the plunge panels.

Safety

The aspect of safety must also be kept in mind. Basically, the user only has to pay attention to a few things in order to achieve a low risk of accidents. A beginner’s mistake in this context can be to mount the cutter too loosely. Then there is a chance that it will blow up in the user’s face. A small rule of thumb therefore says that it is better to mount the attachment a little too tightly (2/3 of the body in the collet). High-quality router bits, such as those from Festool, have useful markings, but these fade over time.

Every Triton router comes with an instruction manual, which is also in German. Here you can find out how to use the router properly and what to avoid. Technologically, the routers can definitely be classified as safe, which is due, among other things, to a soft start. This consistently prevents the milling machine from breaking away when starting.

If you have never worked with a router before, you should first practise counter-rotation routing. Here, the direction of travel provides more resistance, so there is less danger of causing uncontrolled damage to the object. Experienced people like to use climb milling because material can be removed particularly quickly.

Furthermore, you can reduce the risk of injury to a minimum by always keeping your hands on the handle elements during operation. It is also advisable to wear adequate protective clothing. This includes, for example, safety goggles and safety shoes. For extended work, wearing ear protection also increases comfort.

For allergy sufferers, it is also highly recommended to combine the router with a hoover. Many industrial vacuum cleaners are capable of this. The constant removal of chips also reduces the risk of fire in the surrounding area.

Volume

The noise level can also be an important factor in the purchase decision. If the router is excessively loud in practice, this will have a negative effect on your own stress level as well as on your ear health. In addition, neighbours may feel disturbed.

You can find out how loud or quiet your router is by looking at the sound level. This, in turn, is expressed in dB (decibels). A Triton router is around 89 dB in both small and large versions. In sensitive environments (hospitals, nursing homes, etc.) you should be careful. Moreover, this value is quite sufficient to actually cause hearing damage in adults when working for very long periods of time.

In general, Triton cannot distinguish itself here either positively or negatively. If you need a fairly quiet model, a Makita cordless router is recommended. This is consistently below 80 dB.

Price

Of course, the price also has a certain influence on the decision. It should always be in a fair ratio to your own requirements. In the router segment, this means roughly the following: The more power and precision you need, the more you should invest. The same applies to the expectation of long durability in continuous use.

A Triton router is in the mid-price segment. Offers for the compact JOF001 model start at around 200 Pounds. For the current top model with a 2400-watt motor, a budget of more than 300 Pounds is definitely required. The latter, however, allows you to do extensive work quickly, even in the craft sector.

Where to buy

You can buy Triton routers both online and offline. The machines are reliably available all year round on large online marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay. Cheap second-hand offers can also be found there from time to time. Because several dealers usually compete with each other, you can also expect fair pricing.

As expected, the local coverage is not comparable with the well-known brands. The specialist dealers are mostly active with small shops. One exception is Obi, which is a large DIY chain that also offers Triton tools.
